One of them is Style S (Permanent), which characterizes calm, loyal, and cooperative people.

People with a dominant S style are often perceived as stable, empathetic, and supportive. They value harmony in relationships and a calm work environment.

In this article, you will learn:

What are the characteristics of the S-style

What are the strengths of people with this style?

What challenges might arise

How to communicate with people with an S style

What is S style in the DISC model

What is S style in the DISC model

Style S means Stability and focus on relationships and cooperation. Individuals with a high score in this style value peace, predictability, and good relationships with others. A good atmosphere and security are most important to them.

Its mode of operation can be described as:

calm

patient

supportive

cooperative

People with an S style often care about a good team atmosphere and help maintain balance among individuals.

Key features of the S style

People with style S have several characteristic traits that distinguish them in their relationships with others.

Patience

Type S individuals can calmly analyze a situation and do not act impulsively. Naturally patient and calm, they carefully analyze the situation and available options before taking action. They are good listeners and try to fully understand the other person's point of view.

Loyalty

Style S is often very engaged in relationships with people and is loyal to the team and organization. People with Style S are said to be reliable. If they commit to something, it will certainly be done because they cannot imagine letting others down. It is very important to them that others notice and appreciate their commitment and dedication.

Empathy

Individuals with this style have a good understanding of others' emotions and can support their colleagues. Due to their high sensitivity, they have a natural ability to understand and empathize with the feelings of others. As managers or team members, they are concerned not only with a good atmosphere but also with the well-being of employees.

Stability

Style S values predictability and a stable work environment. Style S is sometimes called the steady style, primarily because individuals with Style S tend to be unchanging. They deliberate for a long time before making decisions because perception (what we can observe and measure) is a very important element for them. Therefore, once a decision is made, it is usually difficult to change.

Strengths of style S

Style S has many advantages that make individuals with this profile very valuable team members.

Building trust

People with the S style often build long-lasting relationships based on trust. They care about their colleagues, are willing to listen to others, and are concerned about them. Given trust, they strive not to disappoint it in any way. Their concern for others makes employees and colleagues feel safe and they most often reciprocate with the same.

Cooperation

Thanks to their calm approach, they can work well in teams. People with an S style are happy to listen to others' ideas, and their attitude encourages others to share knowledge and ideas. They enjoy teamwork and excel at it.

Support others

The S Style is eager to help colleagues and ensures a good atmosphere. People with this style love to support others, develop them, and lift their spirits. Colleagues gladly share their thoughts, comments, and concerns with them. People with the S Style are excellent support during change processes because others trust them and follow their recommendations.

Emotional stability

These individuals often remain calm even in difficult situations. They do not react impulsively. First, they calmly analyze the situation, consider the best courses of action, and then react appropriately to the decision made. Their calm and composure often serve as a support for others.

Style Challenges

Like other DISC styles, the S style also has its challenges. In my opinion, our greatest asset as humans is knowing our own weaknesses and being able to manage them. How our weaknesses manifest largely depends on our emotional intelligence. I will dedicate a separate article to this topic.

Conflict avoidance

People of type S can avoid difficult conversations to maintain harmony in relationships. When they feel misunderstood or treated unfairly, they usually don't speak up about it. Instead, they choose silence and deal with difficult emotions on their own. This often leads to problems later on because accumulated grievances and emotions can sometimes lead to outbursts, or even worse, to a sudden decision to stop communicating or having contact with the person involved in the problematic situation.

Difficulty adapting to change

Style S prefers stability, so sudden changes can be challenging for them. Very often, the first reaction to change is reluctance. They need time to accept changes and get used to them. The negative attitude towards change makes it a big problem for many companies to convince them to change. To facilitate their adaptation, it would be advisable to prepare a detailed plan and calmly discuss all the implications of the change with them, as well as address the threats that people with Style S notice.

Excessive submissiveness

Sometimes people with this style may put others' needs above their own. They care about a good atmosphere and making others feel good. Therefore, they sometimes sacrifice their own comfort to please others. Sometimes it's because they want others to feel good, and sometimes it's to avoid conflict. Sacrificing one's own needs for others usually doesn't end well. This leads to a feeling of injustice; people with the Steady style often feel hurt and unappreciated, which affects the quality of relationships with the people for whom the Steady style person makes sacrifices.

How to communicate with someone with an S style

If you're working with someone who has an S style, it's worth adapting your communication method to their preferences.

Key principles:

Communicate calmly and clearly

Give me time to make a decision

build a relationship based on trust

avoid pressure

Type S individuals respond best to calm and friendly communication.

Style in Work and Business

Individuals with a dominant S style thrive in roles that require cooperation and supporting others. They enjoy calm, repetitive work where they can interact with other people.

Common positions include:

HR specialists

Customer service

Project coordinators

Supporting teams role

Stability and empathy help build a healthy work environment.

How to develop the S style

Style S individuals can develop their competencies by learning greater assertiveness and openness to change. It is important to be aware that the reaction to change is in some sense built into personality, and a reluctance to change does not mean that changes are inherently bad.

Worth working on:

decision-making

expressing one's own needs

adaptation to change

This allows Style S to support the team even more effectively.

Summary

The S style in the DISC model describes people who are calm, loyal, and cooperative. Due to their empathy and stability, they are often the backbone of a team and help build positive relationships at work. It also happens that they are exceptionally demanding colleagues.

Understanding Style S allows for better collaboration with individuals of this profile and an appreciation of their role in building stable teams.

Styl S w modelu DISC – cechy, mocne strony i sposób komunikacji Model DISC opisuje cztery podstawowe style zachowań ludzi.
